6 myths about detoxification

There is more and more talk these days about Detox superfoods and diets – it often doesn’t explain what this lifestyle really means. There are impressions that Detox is a miracle mixture that helps you lose weight and fixes your metabolism. Our nutrition consultant Riin wrote down 6 myths that are spread about Detox.

Detoxification is a weight loss system.

Many like to do some exciting detox diets after bigger celebrations or before the start of the beach season to get in better shape. In fact, detox nutrition has a much greater effect on the body. Detox is actually a process of detoxifying the body, not a method of losing weight, although eating healthy can also lead to losing excess weight.

Our body has an amazing capacity to rid itself of harmful substances. We take in toxins daily through eating natural plant toxins. We are exposed to toxicants (man-made toxins) through pesticide residue, air pollution, skin care products, and medications. Plus, our bodies all break down and eliminate substances made and used within ourselves. Detoxification is also designed to inactivate and balance hormones.

It is widely believed that a detox diet should be done from time to time to perform extensive internal cleansing. However, our body needs a major cleansing every day.

Detoxification happens only in the bathroom.

A successful detox diet is often associated with how many times during the day we have to visit the bathroom. In reality, the detox process in the body is more diverse and exciting, and the need to visit the toilet is only related to the last phase of detox. So what happens in the body during detoxification?

Your body breaks down harmful substances in three stage process: 

  1. Phase I breaks apart big toxins and makes them into smaller and even more toxic molecules. Most of this takes place in the liver, which is the body’s main organ for detoxification. In phase I our body needs B vitamins, folic acid, glutathione, antioxidants, carotenoids, vitamin E, vitamin C.
  2. Substances need to be water soluble to be eliminated via feces, urine and sweat. Phase II neutralizes these toxic molecules from phase I and makes them water soluble so they can be excreted. In phase II our body needs amino acids and sulphurated phytochemicals.
  3. After a toxin passes through Phase II, it needs to be excreted from the body. You can promote elimination by staying hydrated (peeing it out) and by normal bowel movements (pooping regularly). Additionally, some substances can be eliminated through sweat, so a sauna and exercise can be beneficial for elimination.

Extreme and one sided dieting or fasting is needed for detoxification.

There is a tendency to believe that detoxification occurs while fasting on water or following an extreme diet, such as a cabbage diet. In different stages of detoxification, our body uses many different nutrients. In order for the body to be able to carry out all the detox phases effectively, as many different nutrients as possible are needed.

Drinking a lot of water helps to detoxify your body.

Dietitians constantly remind us that drinking enough water is absolutely vital in order for our bodies to function properly. And it is—unless you drink too much of it. Though most people look out for the signs of dehydration, overhydration is equally as dangerous. Drinking too much water can result in water intoxication.If you’re drinking a healthy amount of water, the color of your urine should be straw-colored to transparent yellow. Though most people believe clear urine is the healthiest sign of hydration, having urine with no pigmentation at all may be a sign that you’re drinking too much water.
